This project’s goal is to create a cover for every circulating Grateful Dead show from 1965-1995. As making them all individually would have been far too time consuming. These are only meant to fill in gaps really, not be a replacement for any covers out there.
The first version of the covers were generated based on information from Relisten. This involved manually copying show info for each year. Then followed by a cleanup of the data in order to get it into the required format for the following steps. Largely done using Regex and Notepad++ ‘Find and Replace’.
The second version of the covers were generated in the same way, except that the data this time is from Jerrybase. JB is much more accurate than Relisten, which had various errors ranging from incorrect venue info, spelling errors, or a combination of both. The only changes I made were abbreviating any venues that didn’t fit on the cover, usually just abbreviating words or university names.
These covers are based on the original Dick’s Picks covers (used from Volume 1 to 6). Which in turn were based on the packaging of old reel-to-reel tapes.
The covers were based on that but modified slightly. I moved the “Grateful Dead” text up to the box that used to say “Dick’s Picks”. Where the volume number was listed is now the year. The black box at the bottom was shunk, and now contains the full information on where the show happened (including Venue, City, and State. As well as the full date.)
