Kingdom of Days: September 15

New for 2025: Expanded entry and audio for 1977; new entry for 1983, 1987, 1989, 2007, and 2024

1973: A scheduled gig at Syracuse University is cancelled to make room for production work on The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle.

1976: In the ongoing legal battle between Bruce and Mike Appel, a judge rules that Bruce is banned from entering a recording studio until the lawsuit is resolved. The only thing Bruce can do in the meantime is tour.

1977: Bruce wins in the Best Composer category for “Blinded by the Light” (currently charting in the form of Manfred Mann’s cover) at the third annual (and last ever) Rock Music Awards in Hollywood. He’s not present for the ceremony, however–he’s at The Record Plant recording studio in New York City, where he completes (for now) work on “The Little Things (My Baby Does).” More than 30 years later, he’ll pick it up again, finish it, and release it on The Promise.

1978: Bruce and the E Street Band kick off a three-night stand at the Palladium in New York City, opening the show with “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” dedicated to Muhammad Ali, whose title fight with Leon Spinks is that night. Also notable at this show: The last “Something in the Night” until the Reunion Tour and the tour premiere of “Kitty’s Back."

1983: Bruce and the E Street Band hold a recording session for Born in the U.S.A. at The Hit Factory in New York City.

1984: At Night Four (of six) at the Philadelphia Spectrum, Bruce tour premieres “Candy’s Room” and plays “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” for the very first time.

1987: The night before Danny Federici’s wedding, Bruce and the band celebrate Danny at the Taylor Farms Tea Room in Janesville, Wisconsin.

1988: The Human Rights Now! Tour kicks off a week-long North American leg with a show at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, where k.d. lang makes a guest appearance and “Dancing in the Dark” makes its tour premiere.

1989: Bruce records “Viva Las Vegas” at One on One Recording in Los Angeles.

1999: Bruce and the E Street Band play their second of six Reunion Tour shows in Philadelphia.

2004: Patti plays a solo show at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park, and Bruce backs her on guitar and vocals.

2007: Bruce takes his son Evan to see Dropkick Murphys at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City.

2017: Bruce and Steve catch Paul McCartney’s show at Madison Square Garden and join him on stage during the encore, reprising the song that got the power pulled on them at Hyde Park.

2021: Bruce releases the 28th installment of From My Home to Yours on E Street Radio. This episode is entitled “Money Money."

2024: Bruce has played in Asbury Park many times over the years, but never to a crowd this big, as he closes out Sea Hear Now with a headlining set featuring several tour premieres and a setlist tailored for the occasion. Before his set, Bruce pops up on two separate stages, joining undercards Gaslight Anthem and Trey Anastasio Band in guest appearances.
