Seeger Sessions Tour (65)

My all-time favorite show–under a full moon, in an ancient arena, Bruce breathed new life into a collection of American folk songs and shared them with a raucous but respectful Italian crowd.

“Atlantic City” ranks high among Bruce’s best songwriting accomplishments. Rooted deeply in time and place, it tells of the hope of resurrection that never quite pans out.

My first Seeger Sessions show was the most joyous show I’ve ever attended–by Bruce or anyone. The crowd was sparse and the pit was roomy, but Nils helped us put it to good use with an all-night dance party.

“Bobby Jean” makes for a fascinating comparison with “Backstreets” — two songs about broken friendships, one that heals and one that doesn’t.
